Out of the Mouth of Babes

I thought this one was too cute to keep to myself. And it just goes to show you how attentive our children are around us . On Memorial's Day I was invited to a bar-b-que with family and friends. We were all sitting in the backyard eating, relaxing and having a few cocktails. All the while the children were running around just being kids. Everyone was having a great time. One of my nieces decided it was popsicle time for the kids. Some of us adults wanted them too. So while the kids were slurping on theirs another adult niece had her juice in a plastic cup similar to the cocktails floating around. My older niece asked a little five year old boy who was visiting in a teasing manner, "Could I have some of your popsicle?" The little boy says, "Nope!" My niece asks him again and this that time he shook his head. Next my niece asked the little boy, "What if we trade. Your popsicle for my cup?" My girlfriend's nephew who is about seven had been sitting on his mother's lap nearby eating his own popsicle and watching this whole interchange finally said to the little boy, "You better not! There's LICKER in that cup!" This seven year old boy sitting on his mother's lap actually spelled liquor exactly how he hears it and how sees it in his mind. We all almost fell out of our chairs with laughter. And even though he had to be corrected very gently we also commended him for his effort. He got an A+ on that one. And he was so serious with his warning to his little younger friend. It was too cute. And with me being a pre-school teacher I saw it as a classic moment for a child of his age. That was an excellent deduction. Most children at his age don't even have a clue as to how to phonetically break a word down by sound to spell but he also had no idea that he matched a homonym. Two words that sound the same but spelled differently. Out of the mouth of babes.
